Le tableau aurait orné un des autels de la cathédrale Saint-Bavon avant la Révolution française. Le roi de Hollande, un agent du gouvernement prussien, un marchand anglais ont fait des offres qui n’ont pas été acceptées. L’expert Etienne Le Roy le dit sans rapport avec Memling et l’attribue à un peintre allemand de la fin du XVIe siècle.
